The base fabric of these bags is industrial wool produced in Cantel, Guatemala from local sheep. The decorative braid or “rickrack” design is derived from 18th century Spanish peasant dress in the regions of Extremadura and Aragon carried to Guatemala during the colonial era. The style in Guatemala is recognizably from garments used in the town of Sololá to distinguish cofradia members (the important religious brotherhoods that help to govern much of indigenous civic and ceremonial activity). The bags are made by indigenous tailors and seamstresses in the same town.
