Ergonomic Chair for a Backstrap Loom Weaver

This ergonomic chair was designed by Karen Piegorsch of Synergo Arts, a nonprofit organization, in conjunction backstrap weavers in Guatemala. Oxalaju B'atz, a weaving resource center in Panajachel Guatemala started by Mayan Hands and Maya Traditions (Fair Trade artisan groups), worked with Karen. Usually backstrap weavers kneel on the ground, which often results in pain in various parts of their bodies. This ergonomic chair, made in Guatemala, is adjustable to the particular weaver's body. Weavers say they can weave for longer periods and without pain, that they can weave in two days what it would take three days to weave if they were kneeling, and that they enjoy the work more, which feels less like a chore and more like an art when their bodies are more comfortable. We are raising money for the 200 weavers of Asociacion Maya de Desarrollo to purchase these chairs. Each weaver will make some small contribution to the purchase of the chair, in order that she have more of a sense of ownership. Each chair costs approximately $50.
